Balthus, France. 1908 - 2001
Balthazar Klossowski, known as Balthus, made a radical break from 20th century abstraction and avant-garde to explore the traditional figurative painting. An autodidact artist, his work was inspired by Old Masters like Nicolas Poussin and Piero della Francesca. Balthus is one of few living artists to have been represented by the Louvre.
